No Veep for Romney or Clinton???

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

One month ago a McCain/Romney vs Obama/Clinton presidential race seemed plausible.
Today, this seems less likely.
Mitt Romney seems to believe that the animosity between himself and John McCain is enough to keep him off the Republican presidential ticket. In an interview on WILM-AM he said,
“I think there’s some great people he could choose from and I [...]

McCain Ready to pick his Veep?

Saturday, July 26th, 2008

John McCain is “in a position to make the decision [about his VP] on short notice if he wanted to.” according to one of McCain’s top advisers, Charles Black.
I’m reading from this that McCain has picked his VP choice, but hasn’t asked him or her to actually be his running mate. But perhaps he’s already [...]

The Academy: Law Related Education

Sunday, July 20th, 2008

All this week I’ll be at The Academy conference, put on by the State Bar of Texas’ Law Related Education department.
After only one lecture I have SEVERAL blog ideas that I will be posting about soon.

Changing the Constitution
“Would you Sign the Constitution? Would you Sign the Constitution in 1789?”
The Senate is undemocratic
The Electoral College is [...]

It’s OK to eat tomatoes again!

Thursday, July 17th, 2008

After 5 weeks, the FDA has declared today that it’s OK to eat tomatoes.
No declaration yet, however, on if a tomato is a fruit or a vegetable.
Update: Tomatoes are okay, but jalapenos (just the Mexican ones) aren’t.

Batman Begins to be Moral

Wednesday, July 16th, 2008

I watched Batman Begins again for the 5th time last night and it got me thinking. Not about great cinematography, or comic books, or even Katie Holmes.
One of the underlying messages from the film: There arethings that are right and things that are wrong. And more than anything, there are things in the world that [...]

C-SPAN’s Election Bus in Austin

Tuesday, July 15th, 2008

C-SPAN’s Election Bus is coming to Austin tomorrow
Altough C-SPAN itself may not be as exciting as a VH1 Behind the Music special, the C-SPAN Election Bus is a great insight into what goes on behind the TV.
The Bus came to RRHS last year and several of Ms. Esler’s AP-Government students were actually on Television and [...]

Wesley Clark – Right After All?

Tuesday, July 15th, 2008

Does Serving in the Military Really Make You a Better President?
A few weeks ago, former General Wesley Clark got himself into some trouble over a careless comment he made in an interview on CBS’s Face the Nation:
Bob Schieffer: Well you, you went so far as to say that you thought John McCain was, quote, [...]

Torturing a Teenager

Tuesday, July 15th, 2008

Here’s a frightening story.
A video released today shows a young man, 16 years old, being tortured by Canadian officials. Omar Khadr was held in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba and the video is from 2003 (the young man is 21 now).
From the New York Times:
The mood of the detainee, Omar Khadr, just 16 years old at the [...]

Why Obama Could Be Winning by a Lot More Than You Think
Not everyone will agree, but for a number of reasons, this election seems like its Barack Obama’s to lose. He’s been routinely giving speeches to enthusiastic crowds of 50,000 or more, he’s been raising money faster than any other candidate in American history, and [...]

Wrestlers, Comedians, and Politicians: Oh My!!!

Monday, July 14th, 2008

The race for Minnesota’s U.S. Senate seat may get really interesting tonight!
Already in the race we have incumbent Norm Coleman – Republican, and comedian/political commentator Al Franken – Democrat. Fraken is already trying to prove to voters that he’s a funny guy on the side, but he’s serious about being Minnesota’s next Senator. Currently, Franken-D [...]
