McCain’s Acceptance Speech

John McCain gave an acceptance speech from Thursday night at the RNC. The 45 minute speech outlined his history, where he sees the Republican party moving in the future, and why he sees himself as an agent of change in Washington. He also spoke a lot about his running-mate, Governor Sarah Palin of Alaska.

A video and written transcript of the speech.

McCain did a good job of telling his story to the American people. Watch for yourself and make your own mind up.

Check it out: The 2008 Republican National Conventions YouTube Channel. It has all of the speeches from the convention and more!

Test Monday/Tuesday

There will be a test on Monday/Tuesday!

Exam on Monday

The test will be over Natural Rights, Classical Republicanism (Locke, Hobbes, Jefferson), and the different types of government. This is Chapter 1 in the textbook.

The test has 40 multiple choice questions and 4 free response questions. The free response questions will all be about Natural Rights and Classical Republicanism. Be sure you understand the concepts: social contract, natural rights, and state of nature!

I would suggest using the PowerPoint shown in class to study.

I would also consult the textbook and any homework/quizzes.

The PowerPoint can be found online (and available for download in .ppt format) at the following link:
http://www.slideshare.net/davidjosman/unit-1-1-nr-v-cr-presentation

An announcement about the test wasn’t made in 1st Period – please tell your classmates! (The test is, however, on the six weeks schedule.)

Some specific terms to know:

  • government
  • unitary government
  • democracy
  • dictatorship
  • state of nature
  • federal government
  • social contract
  • despotism
  • divine right of kings
  • absolute monarchy

Also: Parliamentary Government (we didn’t discuss this in class)

  • The executive is chosen by the legislature
  • The prime minister and cabinet are part of the legislature
  • The prime minister and the cabinet must resign if they lose the support of a majority of the legislature

Be careful to not simply memorize terms. You need to have a greater understanding of the entire subject!

Let me know if you have any questions or problems.

Palin’s Speech

Governor Sarah Palin is the first woman to be named the running mate for the Republican party!

Wednesday night Gov. Palin spoke at the Republican Convention in Minnesota, and gave a pretty good speech!

Watch it for your-self! What do you think? (The first two minutes of the video are simply cheering)

Republican Convention!

The Republican Convention starts Tuesday!

Starting Tuesday in Minneapolis, MN the Republicans are coming together to nominate John McCain for President and head into the November 4 elections.

There will be several days of speeches, bands, parties, and good times on national television. It’s a lot of free press for the Republican Party. The RNC Schedule

However, with Hurricane Gustav hitting the Gulf Coast, the John McCain and the Republican Party have decided to post-pone the Convention for a day (to Tuesday). The NY Times notes that the storm has serious risks and possible rewards for the Republican Party. Check it out!

Hopefully, for the Republicans, there will be a ‘bounce’ after the convention. The Dems didn’t get the bounce they wanted. With Sarah Palin as John McCain’s running mate, there will be plenty to talk about!

What do you think? Will Hurricane Gustav help or hurt the Republican Party? Will Sarah Palin give John McCain the ‘bump’ that the Republicans need to pass Obama up?
