What’s up with the Women?

Wow! I found this story absolutely fascinating.

Ladies – take pride in the Granite State, New Hampshire!

All Things Considered, November 9, 2008 · The presidential election was not the only historic political moment last week: In New Hampshire, voters elected 13 women — out of 24 total members — to the state Senate, making it the country’s first state legislative body with more women than men. New Hampshire Senate President Sylvia Larsen talks to host Jacki Lyden about the election.

You can listen to the story on NPR here: Women Dominate New Hampshire State Legislature

BTW - Texas had 36 women (by my count) in the most recent Legislature! Most of them were Republicans too! I’m not sure, however, if that number went up, or down, after the most recent election. Do you know Tom?

Test Monday/Tuesday

There will be a test on Monday/Tuesday!

Exam on Monday

The test will be over Natural Rights, Classical Republicanism (Locke, Hobbes, Jefferson), and the different types of government. This is Chapter 1 in the textbook.

The test has 40 multiple choice questions and 4 free response questions. The free response questions will all be about Natural Rights and Classical Republicanism. Be sure you understand the concepts: social contract, natural rights, and state of nature!

I would suggest using the PowerPoint shown in class to study.

I would also consult the textbook and any homework/quizzes.

The PowerPoint can be found online (and available for download in .ppt format) at the following link:

An announcement about the test wasn’t made in 1st Period – please tell your classmates! (The test is, however, on the six weeks schedule.)

Some specific terms to know:

  • government
  • unitary government
  • democracy
  • dictatorship
  • state of nature
  • federal government
  • social contract
  • despotism
  • divine right of kings
  • absolute monarchy

Also: Parliamentary Government (we didn’t discuss this in class)

  • The executive is chosen by the legislature
  • The prime minister and cabinet are part of the legislature
  • The prime minister and the cabinet must resign if they lose the support of a majority of the legislature

Be careful to not simply memorize terms. You need to have a greater understanding of the entire subject!

Let me know if you have any questions or problems.
